What PC's Work
You will need a PC to run your scanning or diagnostic software, preferably a laptop PC. The hardware requirements for the PC are largely dictated by what scanning or diagnostic software you plan on running.

At Tuner Tools, we prefer PCMSCAN by Palmer Performance Engineering.  You can download a free trial and then when you've decided to keep it, get a license here to make it fully functional.

PCMSCAN System Requirements

Recommended and minimum system requirements:

Configuration Recommended Minimum
CPU Pentium II 400Mhz or faster Pentium 200Mhz
Memory 64MB or more 32MB
Hard Disk Free Space 100MB or more 30MB
Display SVGA 800x600 16-bit color VGA 640x480 256 color
Operating System Windows 95, 98, SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP
Serial Port 1 available RS232 port, or RS232 USB adapter and free USB port

Whatever PC you end up using, it must be equipped with a serial (RS-232) interface or serial interface adapter. Almost all older laptops and PC's come with the serial interface built into the computer itself. It will be a 9 pin male connector that looks like this (the connector on left):

Many newer laptop computers no longer have a built in serial interface, and only come equipped with USB interface ports, as seen here:

If you have a newer laptop that does not have the 9 pin serial RS-232 interface built in, you have a few choices to add one. In order to use our ALDL OBD1 interface cable you must have this 9 pin serial interface. You can either buy a USB to serial adapter, or buy a PCMCIA PC card that has a RS-232 serial 9 pin interface.

The Diagnostic Software
The last item needed is the diagnostic software that will run on your laptop to collect and record the data from your OBD1 system. There are a number of excellent software packages available, with some of them being free and others giving you a trial period of fully functional use.
